It looks like a styling choice. It is not. How the eyes are made on a soft toy determines the safety category the item falls into, how it ages, whether it can be cleaned, and how the face reads at small sizes. If you only learn to check one thing on a plush toy, make it this, because it is visible from a photograph and it tells you a great deal about the rest of the manufacturing.

The three methods

Eyes are made in one of three ways. They are embroidered directly into the fabric with thread; they are moulded plastic components locked through the fabric with a washer from inside; or they are printed onto the face. The first two are proper construction. The third is a shortcut, and printed eyes crack, fade and wear away at exactly the point where a face needs to stay crisp.

How plastic safety eyes actually work

A moulded eye has a shank on the back that passes through a punched hole in the fabric. A washer is pushed onto the shank from the inside, before the toy is stuffed, and it should not come off again without destroying the toy. Fitted properly they are secure. The problem is that this can only be checked from the outside by pulling firmly, and there is no way to distinguish a properly locked eye from a glued one by sight. If an eye moves at all under a firm tug, treat the toy as unsuitable for any young child immediately.

Why embroidery wins on small figures

Below about ten centimetres, a moulded eye becomes a disproportionately large hard object on a soft body, and its glossy finish tends to dominate the face. Thread reads better at that scale and takes up no depth. Miniature ranges such as Micro Teenies tend towards embroidered faces for this reason as much as for safety, and the result is a face that stays intact through years of dusting and handling.

The failure modes are different

Embroidery fails slowly. Threads fluff, the surface picks up dust, and after many years the stitching can loosen, but the eye never disappears in one moment. Plastic fails suddenly: an eye is either present or it is on the carpet. That difference matters most where the toy is likely to be handled by someone who will not notice or report the loss, which includes small children and, in a different way, anyone who keeps toys in a bag.

What to check on any face

  • Pull each eye firmly between thumb and finger, if it shifts even slightly, do not give the toy to a child.
  • Look for adhesive residue around the base of a moulded eye, which suggests glue rather than a washer.
  • On embroidery, check thread density, sparse stitching lets the base fabric show through.
  • Symmetry: measure by eye from the centre line, since small drift is visible but hard to unsee later.
  • Whether any part of the face is printed, and if so, whether it has already begun to crack.

What happens if an eye comes off

A detached plastic eye is a small hard object of exactly the wrong size, and the hole it leaves opens a route into the filling. Neither of those things should be left in circulation around a young child. Repairs that involve glue are not repairs, since the replacement will fail the same way and the adhesive itself is not intended for that use. The honest options are opening the toy to refit an eye properly, replacing the eyes with embroidery, or retiring the toy.

The cleaning consequence

Plastic eyes are the reason machine washing and tumble drying ruin plush toys. Heat softens the adhesives around applied parts and stresses the plastic, and agitation works at the joint between hard and soft materials. Toys with embroidered faces tolerate careful surface cleaning far better, though the same rule about air drying still applies to protect the filling and the pile.

The rule that holds up

For a display shelf, either method works and it comes down to which face you prefer. For anything that will be handled by a child, or that lives in a house where a very small child sometimes visits, embroidered features are the sensible default and the age marking on the label still applies regardless. A gentle-looking character does not change the physics of a small hard component.
